Collaboration is a frequently used word for non-collaborative activities; many collaborative activities only satisfy one element or one party within the activity. This talk explored a more substantive definition of collaboration, its meaning and its actions, using one specific international collaboration between AMEE and China to illustrate the way that AMEE has re-defined the meaning of collaboration.
Professor Trevor Gibbs. MB. ChB, MD, DA. SFHEA, FAcadMED, MMedSc, FRCGP, FAMEE is presently an Independent Consultant in Medical Education and Primary Care, WHO consultant in Primary Care, Medical Education and Adolescent Health and Professor of Medical Education, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, PRC.
Graduating from Liverpool University Medical School, Professor Gibbs’ early career was in Oncology, before becoming a General Practitioner (GP) in the UK. As a GP, Professor Gibbs was involved in many of the innovations in GP education and service and held the position of Deputy Dean of General Practice at Liverpool before becoming Director of Community Studies at the University of Liverpool in 1996. Following a successful career in Liverpool, he has subsequently held inaugural chair positions in many parts of the world, supporting the development of new curricula.
He writes extensively on the subject of Medical Education, with a special interest in Curriculum Development, the Social Accountability of Medical Schools, Educational Sustainability and Medical Education in Resource Constrained Countries. As Associate Editor of Medical Teacher he had the specific responsibility for the development of the AMEE Guides in medical education, the BEME Guides in medical education, the Medical Education around the World series, as well as general publication duties. He is now Associate Editor for the new e-journal MedEdPublish, which approaches publication through an alternative post-publication review process.
